Charleston’s Ryder Hotel Unveils Breezy Vintage Surfer Vibe To Celebrate With A Unique Design Overhaul

The Ryder hotel in Charleston, South Carolina establishes a sunny beach getaway through its new design which combines retro surf aesthetics with coastal beach life. The Best Western King Charles Inn has undergone a complete transformation to become a distinctive hotel that showcases the cultural heritage of the Lowcountry and American coastal regions. The combination of Mid-Century Modern fashion and bohemian design elements creates a space that provides both modern style and relaxed comfort. The hotel is dedicating all its resources to create the most thrilling experience for visitors who will come to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in summer 2026.

A New Chapter for the Ryder Hotel

After a 48 million USD sale and rebranding, The Ryder opened in May 2021 under the management of Makeready, a Dallas-based hospitality firm. The hotel underwent a full renovation, which was designed by Cortney Bishop Design to reflect the essence of Southern California’s vintage surf culture. According to Riley Nail, Head of Brand at Makeready, the goal was to create an environment that felt welcoming and full of personality rather than focusing on exclusive luxury. This laid-back approach was intentional, offering guests a fresh and unique experience that sets The Ryder apart from other properties in Charleston.

Designing the Perfect Southern Escape

The design of The Ryder is a celebration of coastal energy and the relaxed vibes of destinations like Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, and Tybee Island. The collaboration between Cortney Bishop and Makeready was easy and organic, as they both shared an understanding of the South’s charm without resorting to clichés. The hotel features a playful blend of Mid-Century Modern and Boho-Chic styles, drawing on sun-washed tones and natural materials that echo the surrounding Lowcountry landscape.

The communal spaces within The Ryder are designed to reflect the free-spirited nature of surf culture. The Little Palm Bar, for example, exudes energy and creativity with its colour palette of terracotta, mossy greens, and ocean blues. The pool deck, emblazoned with the phrase A Good Time State of Mind at the bottom, invites guests to relax and unwind, while the guestrooms offer a tranquil environment, combining earthy tones and layered textures for an understated yet thoughtful aesthetic.

Embracing Charleston’s Historic Yet Easygoing Vibe

Charleston is renowned for its historic charm, and The Ryder effortlessly blends the city’s old-world allure with a breezy, contemporary vibe. The design integrates clean lines and honest materials with coastal influences that create a sense of movement. The calming nature of the hotel’s spaces is balanced with the playful energy that defines the city itself. Nail describes the hotel’s design as curated but effortless, with every detail designed to create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for guests.

The hotel’s guestrooms are a reflection of this relaxed yet intentional aesthetic, offering ample space and natural light. Guests are enveloped in a calming environment, where they can rest and recharge after a day of exploring Charleston’s rich cultural offerings.

An Artistic and Playful Touch

Art plays an integral role at The Ryder, with many of the pieces sourced locally or commissioned specifically for the hotel. The artwork is designed to feel personal and homey rather than detached and gallery-like. From cheeky prints to nostalgic nods to vintage surf culture, the art adds to the hotel’s layered and welcoming atmosphere. Nail explains that the art pieces were carefully chosen to bring narrative and texture to the hotel, contributing to the overall feeling of being in a thoughtfully curated space.

Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary with Style

To mark America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, The Ryder is offering a special package, A Summer of Time: Toasting 250 Years of American History. From May through July, the hotel will host a series of exclusive events and experiences that celebrate the nation’s history. One highlight is the Time Capsule Turndowns, where guests will receive a curated keepsake from a different decade of American history during their stay. Additionally, the hotel will host a Patriot Pajama Party, designed in collaboration with Elby, adding a playful touch to the celebrations.

As Charleston is one of only four cities spotlighted nationwide for America’s milestone birthday, The Ryder’s participation in these festivities makes it an even more enticing destination for travellers. Whether exploring the hotel’s design, lounging by the pool, or experiencing the special anniversary events, guests are sure to enjoy a one-of-a-kind Charleston getaway.

A True Southern Escape

The Ryder Hotel operates as an immersive experience which presents Charleson’s coastal spirit through its modern boutique hotel design. The Ryder establishes itself as a distinctive hospitality experience through its combination of vintage surf culture and Mid-Century Modern design and relaxed bohemian atmosphere. The special design and fun environment of the venue together with its unique America 250th anniversary events will create a summer 2026 must-visit destination.
